About Karin Cutler

Contemporary Artist

Karin is a mixed media painter whose work blends acrylics with natural pigments and textures including ash, charcoal, rocks, and sand, gathered from the landscape surrounding her rural studio.

Drawing inspiration from her Scandinavian heritage, she embraces a neutral, calming palette, using layers and texture to create depth, movement, and subtle intrigue. While her process is energetic, her intent is to evoke a quiet, reflective calm.

Inspired by her surroundings: the beach, ocean, bush, and rural terrain, Karin’s paintings are an intimate reflection of both her personal experiences and the natural world.

A short behind the scenes video capturing my studio space, a glimpse of my process, inspiration and my art

Hello - I'm Karin

I am a Swedish-born, Australian-based contemporary painter. After studying Fashion and Textile Design at Sydney College of the Arts, my creative journey took unexpected turns as life led me down different paths, with art taking a temporary backseat. Over the years, I continued to explore and experiment with photography, drawing, and eventually discovered painting — a true 'love at first sight' moment. Though it wasn’t planned, pursuing a career as a professional artist became a natural progression once I developed a consistent, daily painting practice.

I am on a never-ending journey to find new ways to express myself on the canvas with emotion and authenticity.

is a continuous play between inspiration, curiosity, experimentation, adding & subtracting, reflection, problem solving and critical thinking.

I search for balance between spontaneity and control, chaos and calm.

PROCESS

"A work of art which did not begin in emotion is not art".

Paul Cezanne

Almost everything around me, be it nature, travels or my everyday inpsires me. I love imperfections, organic shapes, and rough textures: weathered rock, bark, the ocean on rainy days, cracked plaster and peeling paint on old walls. My art passion is consuming, it provides me with a wonderful sense of purpose…..and a long never ending to-do list!

INSPIRATION

My main studio is a converted shed on our rural property on the mid coast of NSW. I also work out of a home studio in Sydney.

A PAINTING
an emotional roller coaster of creativity

IMG_7907.jpeg

The creative process is an ongoing journey of dedication — hours spent learning, experimenting, reading, and exploring, filled with moments of vulnerability, exhilaration, frustration, and discovery. It’s a constant emotional rollercoaster, with both setbacks and triumphs, and this energy forms the foundation of every artwork.

Each painting carries a piece of my heart, capturing a unique moment in time from my life.
